India Progressing Toward Green Infrastructure: Successful Construction of Wildlife Underpass on NH-53

🛣️

On the border of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, NHAI has completed the construction of a dedicated wildlife underpass along the Raipur–Nagpur section of NH-53. This project stands as an inspiring example of balancing development and ecology.

🌿 Safe Passage for Wildlife

The underpass lies within a sensitive wildlife zone where animal movement was previously threatened by vehicular traffic. Guided by forest officials and environmental experts, the design allows leopards, deer, jackals, porcupines, and other animals to cross freely without obstruction.

Key ecological features include:

  • Preservation of natural topography
  • Integration of organic elements at ground level
  • Planting of soft vegetation to maintain surrounding greenery

🌳 Symbol of Green Infrastructure

This underpass reflects a philosophy of developing India’s national highways with biodiversity in mind. During construction:

  • Natural land contours were retained as much as possible
  • Noise-control techniques were adopted
  • Locally sourced, eco-friendly materials were used to minimize environmental impact

🎥 Positive Results Emerging

Camera traps have been installed to monitor wildlife movement, and initial footage clearly shows animals using the passage—proving its early success.

🌍 Regional Impact

The underpass will benefit forest areas around the Udanti–Sitanadi Tiger Reserve and Dongargarh–Rajnandgaon. It ensures both wildlife protection and smoother highway traffic.
